NYS Pistol Safety/CCW Course Phase I&II

Service Description
The updated NYS Pistol Safety & Concealed Carry (CCW) Course teaches the basic knowledge, skills, and attitude for owning and operating a pistol safely. Students learn the rules for safe gun handling; pistol parts and operation; ammunition; shooting fundamentals; platform; proper form and presentation; and continued opportunities for skill development. Pursuant to the new state regulations, attention will also be given to suicide prevention, situational awareness, conflict de-escalation and management, best practices for encountering law enforcement and safe firearm storage. This 2-part course will kick off with Phase I, consisting of instructor-led lecture covering such topics as licensing and application process; NYSRPA v. Bruen; self-defense law as it relates to Article 35: Defense of Justification; Castle Doctrine; The Use of Force Continuum; the various pistol action types; pistol operation of both a revolver and semi-automatic handgun; ammunition, and more. During the following week, students will meet with the instructor again to fulfill the Phase II requirements which will highlight 8 elements of handgun ergonomics, mechanics and safety, with a primary focus on proper trigger-to-grip length, finger placement, fit and feel, and finally a NYS mandated live-fire exercise and 50 question examination. Students will also have the hands-on opportunity to explore a variety of pistols. Additional questions will be addressed and all certifications will be distributed during this time. Students will have continued one-on-one access to the instructor throughout the application process and beyond. This course is a prerequisite to applying for a pistol permit in most NYS counties and is pursuant to New York Penal - Article § 400.00 and satisfies the new state training requirements pursuant to New York Executive Law § § 837(23)(a) and 235(1). Article 35, Castle Doctrine, the Use of Force Continuum, and self-defense law are also explained. Please be aware that this course is approved in Oneida, Herkimer, Madison, Lewis, Chenango, Otsego and Sullivan counties at this time. This NRA certification is not valid in Onondaga, Oswego or Jefferson Counties, or any other county not specified above. Prior to class, an announcement and course summary will be emailed in advance. You must register with your YOUR COMPLETE NAME for certification purposes. NO DOWN PAYMENT IS REQUIRED. Payment will be due at the conclusion of Phase II. A bagged lunch is recommended.
